in the heart of Peten

ITINERARY

Day 1

Airport pick-up and transfer to your hotel in Guatemala City.

Dinner (at your leisure) and overnight stay at the Hotel Stofella.

Day 2

Breakfast at the hotel.

Return to the airport for a transfer by small plane to the Petén region. Arrival in Flores and transfer to your hotel.

Afternoon and lunch at leisure in the colorful and picturesque town of Flores. Dinner at a restaurant overlooking the lake at sunset. Meet your local guide. Overnight stay at the Hotel Isla de Flores.

Day 3

Breakfast at the hotel and transfer by private bus to the starting point of the adventure/survival trek to Yaxha, meaning "green water" in the Mayan language. The city is located on the shores of Lake Yaxha, which supplied the Mayan population with fresh water. Hike along the marked trails of this large, relatively uncrowded site. Don't miss the view of the lake from the Temple of the Red Hands. After visiting Yaxha, you'll hike for about an hour to reach the first campsite deep in the jungle. Before nightfall, you'll build a fire in the "prehistoric" style, set up camp, and prepare the tools and supplies you'll need for your "survival" in the Petén!

Day 4

Day 2 in Yaxha National Park near the Belize border. The national park is part of the Maya Biosphere Reserve, home to an incredibly diverse range of wildlife, including jaguars, pumas, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, tapirs, macaws, toucans, and all kinds of parrots. As soon as we enter, the jungle will surprise us with its sounds, smells, and colors. You'll hike towards Nakum (this isolated site in the Petén jungle is only accessible on foot). After a 5-hour hike, you'll reach a lagoon where you'll need to collect and process the water to make it drinkable. Once your camp is set up and night has fallen, you'll visit the archaeological site of Nakum. You'll truly feel like Indiana Jones discovering a lost city! You'll read the stars from the site's tallest building, overlooking the jungle. Return to camp and sleep in your hammock.

Day 5

Day 3 in the heart of Yaxha National Park. This will be the most challenging day. 20 km of pristine jungle separate you from your next destination. You'll divide the day into two parts, taking a long break at midday near a large, unexpected clearing. The lush jungle will present a challenge, but the group's solidarity and your legendary sense of direction will make all the difference. Your objective: reach a water source to replenish your energy. Once at your campsite, setting up camp will be a breeze. The forest's resources will hold no more secrets for you, and you'll try your hand at fishing in the lagoon to get some protein.

Day 6

Day 4: Total immersion and self-sufficiency in the jungle. Our local guides will have shared all the best techniques and knowledge for moving, finding food, and drinking water safely in the forest. The sounds of the animals will seem familiar. In short... you'll become one with nature. You'll head east towards Belize. Your destination is the prestigious El Naranjo site. In the early afternoon, you'll arrive at your final campsite. You'll have carried and rekindled the fire at camp, the fruits and seeds you've gathered will be your meal, the hammocks will be quickly set up, and you'll start to look forward to the next day and its delights.

Day 7

Last day among the monkeys and multicolored butterflies. You will break camp and head towards the ancient Mayan city of El Naranjo. Along with Yaxha and Nakum, these cities formed a political and social triangle. The archaeological site was discovered in 1905 and partially excavated, but much remains to be explored. A few kilometers will separate you from your final destination. You will quickly cover the last few kilometers to reach the meeting point where 4x4 vehicles will be waiting to take you to Melchor de Mencos. A buffet laden with culinary delights awaits you (sausage, beer, fresh fruit, juice, cheese, bread, etc.). With a full stomach, you will embark on a challenging 1.5-hour journey back to "civilization." At midday, you will once again smell the asphalt of the highway that leads to Belize.

In the afternoon, we will arrange your bus transfer to Flores, where you will return to the luxury and comfort of your hotel room. Dinner at your leisure and likely a festive affair. Overnight at the Isla de Flores Hotel.

Day 8

Breakfast at the hotel.

Free morning to recover physically from the trek and the previous evening's activities.

In the early afternoon, departure for Tikal National Park, "tourist mode." Explore the impressive city of Tikal, built in the 4th century BC. Some 3,000 structures emerge from the rainforest in a mystical atmosphere. The Temple of the Great Jaguar faces the Temple of the Masks in the main plaza, the city's nerve center. At 65 meters high, the Temple of the Serpent was the tallest building in the New World until the 19th century.

Nature is equally captivating, enveloping the traveler who enters the reserve. Keep an eye out for spider monkeys, pheasants, coatis, toucans, and other multicolored parrots. The calls of howler monkeys can be heard for miles around. The scents of vines and roots surprise the traveler. From the top of a pyramid, we admire the sunset over the Petén jungle and reflect on our journey and how fortunate we are.

Return to Flores - Dinner - Overnight at the Hotel Isla de Flores.

Day 9

Private transfer to Flores airport for your return flight to Guatemala City, followed by a short private bus transfer to Antigua. Drop off your luggage at the hotel and enjoy some free time to explore the city.

Surrounded by three majestic volcanoes, the former capital of Central America has suffered throughout its history from numerous natural disasters: earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions.

The city is an open-air museum with over thirty monasteries and convents, and a cathedral. Cobblestone streets line the flower-filled patios of colonial houses. Stroll along the arcades of Parque Central, observing the distant volcanoes Fuego, Agua, and Acatenango. Beautiful Antigua leaves no visitor indifferent.

Lunch and dinner at your leisure. Overnight at the Hotel Meson de Maria.

Day 10

Breakfast at the hotel, then early departure for Pacaya Volcano, one of the three active volcanoes in Guatemala. After a 1.5-hour drive, the ascent begins (3-hour hike, 400 meters of elevation gain). The hike is accessible to all and offers beautiful views of the valley and the Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango volcanoes. Once at the base of the cone, you can observe the crater and the fumaroles escaping from it. Lava flows can be seen when the volcano is active.

Horseback riding is available on site.

Descent from the giant volcano and return to Antigua around 4:00 PM.

Free late afternoon and dinner at your leisure.
