"The world of the Waorani"

Amazon

Survival course in Ecuador

Difficulty:

Ecuador

General route

For 10 days, you will discover the fascinating Waorani people amidst breathtaking landscapes , passing through the capital city of Quito, perched at 3,000 meters altitude on the "zero latitude" plateau. You will cross a mountain pass at over 4,200 meters altitude to descend to sea level and reach the largest rainforest in the world. After a 2-hour drive on a dirt road and a 6- to 8-hour canoe trip, you will arrive at the starting point of your expedition. Incredibly, we promise to take you to the edge of the known world, where the Waorani people still live, uncontacted. Not a day will go by without seeing fabulous butterflies, toucans, parakeets and parrots, tracks of anacondas or jaguars, and who knows, if you're lucky, you might even see a new species that no one has yet identified ! Throughout your expedition, you will craft tools to improve your camp, you will make baskets, furniture... in one of the richest biotopes on the planet. Indeed, you will be immersed in the AMAZON... the real one... the one with kapok trees, palm trees, lianas, giant ferns...

IN SHORT, AN UNMISSABLE ADVENTURE IN A DREAM SETTING, IMMERSING YOU AMONG THE WAORANI!

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Private transfer with driver from Quito airport to your hacienda located near the airport. You are at an altitude of 2,800 meters in the heart of the Andean corridor. From the hacienda, weather permitting, you might see volcanoes such as Pichincha, Cayambe, Antisana, and Cotopaxi. Dinner and overnight stay at the hacienda.

Day 2 - Breakfast and workshop presentation - Early morning departure by private transport from Quito to the city of Puyo. You will cross a mountain pass at 4,200 meters, likely shrouded in mist, as you gradually descend towards the foothills of the Amazon. We will stop regularly to admire the breathtaking scenery and views of the entire Amazon basin, or simply enjoy a snack at a typical Amazonian restaurant.

Arrive in the afternoon at your accommodation: a superb resort nestled in the forest awaits you. A haven of peace where woods, nature, monkeys, birds, tranquility, and smiles will soothe you. A lovely evening enjoying a delicious meal will help you recover from jet lag. Dinner and overnight stay in a lodge in Puyo.

Day 3 - After breakfast, you'll depart for the river (1.5-hour 4x4 drive). This will be your true entry point into the Amazon. You'll then reach the basic landing stage. Motorized canoes will be waiting for you for a 6- to 8-hour journey downriver, navigating through rapids, tree stumps, and rocks to reach a small Waorani community. A true adventure in itself! The river is virtually uninhabited and wild, taking you to the edge of the "known world," a refuge for some of the greatest biodiversity on Earth.

Arriving at your home in the late afternoon, you'll appreciate the Waorani's simple, sometimes a little reserved, hospitality—but the Waorani are "warriors with a fierce reputation." You'll be introduced to the drink called "chicha." Face painting and a delicious Amazonian Waorani meal await you, and if you're friendly, you might even be treated to traditional welcoming dances. Overnight in a hammock on-site in traditional huts and shelters.

Day 4 - Breakfast and departure for total immersion in the forest accompanied by the Waorani. This survival course will consist of several modules that will be covered continuously, not consecutively (depending on what arises): Introduction to the equatorial forest: humidity levels / forest density / atmospheric pressure under and above the canopy, altitude variations / animals / edible and inedible vegetation / medicinal plants / dangerous vegetation / watercourses...

Among the survival techniques:

Shelter workshop: hammock assembly and Waorani shelter construction

Fire workshop: which technique to use depending on the available tools? The Waorani still possess the ancestral technique for making embers; they will share their tips to help you successfully get a flame going.

Water workshop: how to find or collect water / filter it / consume it.

Knot workshop: the main knots useful in survival situations or in daily life. First aid workshop: basic first aid, dos and don'ts, especially in the jungle / emergency stretcher / splint for fractures or sprains / using plant-based remedies for treatment...

Traps, hunting, and fishing workshop using the Waorani method for sustenance only.

Topography workshop: map reading / jungle navigation / compass use / astronomy.

Crossing workshop: river navigation / fording / navigating strong currents / raft building. Overnight bivouac.

Day 5 - You spent your first night in the Amazon rainforest, experiencing varying degrees of tranquility due to the nighttime noises. You will get used to them and gain confidence if you haven't already. You will continue your trek through the forest to practice the skills covered in this course. You can choose with your instructor whether to move from your initial campsite or simply stay in the same area. You'll need to think about tomorrow's leg, which will take you to the other side of the river. Overnight camping.

Day 6 - You've either regained your smile or fatigue has set in. Both are part of this training, and you'll need to learn to manage them. Learning the techniques will be the best distraction. The Waorani will show you their sacred waterfall hidden deep in the forest. A great moment of relaxation and spirituality awaits. Overnight in a bivouac.

Day 7 - Conserve your energy. This will be the most mentally challenging day, but what a satisfaction to reach the end! You'll approach the village and set up camp by a lagoon where the pyranhas can be caught. The forest will become your natural environment; you've become a Waorani! Overnight in a bivouac.

Day 8 - You persevered. You've regained your strength because, in the end, the forest isn't so terrible after all. Camp will be dismantled, and a short walk will take you to the riverbank for a quick but intense transfer to the Waorani village. A delicious meal awaits, and you'll be offered handmade souvenirs. This will be your chance to ask your instructors any final questions and perhaps even give a kiss to the parrot. After saying goodbye to the community, you'll continue your journey upriver for 6 to 8 hours, followed by a 1.5-hour 4x4 ride.

This evening, after a hearty and delicious dinner, you'll sleep at the lodge in Puyo and enjoy a well-deserved shower. A debriefing session will follow, providing a fitting celebration of this training course. Overnight at the lodge.

Day 9 - After a hearty breakfast, you'll begin your return journey to Quito. On the way, if you haven't fallen too far behind schedule, you'll make a short stop in Baños for a soak in the hot springs of this high-altitude spa resort (baths not included, allow $5).

This will be followed by lunch. Arrival in the late afternoon at your hotel in Quito.

You'll have some free time to explore the area around the hotel, which is located between the Historic Center and the Modern Tourist Center.

Dinner will be arranged at a local restaurant.

Overnight at the hotel, where you'll appreciate the decor inspired by the indigenous worldview of the country.

Day 10 - Breakfast - Free time to explore Quito's Historic Center, renowned as the largest and richest on the continent. It includes the Church of the Society of Jesus, the most gold-covered church in Latin America. You will have the opportunity to visit the San Francisco Church and the El Alabado Museum, which houses magnificent archaeological artifacts organized according to the worlds of the indigenous people's worldview. (Lunch, visits, and site entrance fees are not included.)

You will collect your belongings from the hotel before being transferred to the airport for your return flight to France.
