Survival course in Sao Tome

Difficulty:

Sao Tomé

General route

São Tomé is the smallest island nation in Africa and a biosphere reserve . Its unique geographical location gives it an atypical place on the world map. For one week, you will attempt to reach the mythical point of 0° latitude and 0° longitude. You and your companions will land on a black sand beach in Obo National Park to immerse yourselves in one of the world's most beautiful, pristine, and protected jungles. You will be amazed by the extraordinary biodiversity and the breathtaking scenery. You will progress day by day, from one campsite to the next, crossing mini-deltas, beaches of pebbles, black sand, white sand, and golden sand, all under the watchful gaze of Pico Cao Grande, a peak seemingly straight out of a film set designer's imagination. Your reward will be immense, as you will reach the point where the Equator and the Greenwich Meridian intersect. Along your journey, you might have the chance to witness the beautiful spectacle of turtles laying their eggs. Indeed, five species of turtles—the green turtle, the loggerhead turtle, the olive ridley turtle, the hawksbill turtle, and finally the largest of all, the leatherback turtle—come to the São Toméan coast every year to breed.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrival on the island of São Tomé - Transfer to Monte Forte to reach an ecolodge, a true little tropical paradise. Briefing - Rest and dinner on a beautiful terrace with a breathtaking panoramic view to the west overlooking the ocean.

Day 2 - Breakfast - Preparation of equipment and departure towards Santa Catarina until the end of the paved road. Here, the survival challenge begins on this rugged coastline with its black sand. The jungle calls to you as if to protect you. The rest of the day will be devoted to understanding the natural environment, analyzing and identifying edible plants, setting up camp, and building group cohesion. Dinner and overnight camping with a little more food.

Overnight camping.

Day 3 - You have spent your first night in the jungle, lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean. After dismantling your makeshift camp, you'll set off to explore your new surroundings and find a new campsite. The immersion will be total. Accompanied by your guides, you'll complete several modules, presented continuously rather than sequentially (depending on what arises): Introduction to the jungle: humidity levels / vegetation density / variations in water salinity, high and low tide / animals / edible and inedible vegetation / medicinal plants / dangerous vegetation / water currents...

Survival techniques include:

- Shelter building workshop: setting up your hammock and laying a tarp.

- Fire making workshop: without a lighter, which techniques to use depending on the available tools? All the tips and tricks to help you successfully start a fire.

- Water workshop: how to find or collect fresh water / filter it / drink it.

- Knot making workshop: the main knots useful in survival situations and in everyday life.

- First aid workshop: basic first aid, dos and don'ts / emergency stretcher / splint for fractures or sprains / using plants for healing...

- Trapping workshop: hunting and fishing for food only.

- Topography workshop: map reading / orientation / using a compass / reading the stars.

- River crossing workshop: river navigation / fording / crossing strong currents / raft building.

Overnight bivouac.

Days 4-5 - Departure to reach the new campsite for the evening on a vast gray and black sand beach. You will have to cross rivers, climb hillsides, and step over giant tree trunks. It's not uncommon to also discover the remains of the settlements of the former Portuguese colonists who tried to survive here. This initially hostile environment will welcome you with open arms. Thrills guaranteed! You are now truly part of the São Tomé adventure family! Hiking in the pristine jungle, far from the beaten track, will be an extraordinary experience.

The days will be dedicated to fishing and improving the camp. Expeditions will be offered to explore the surrounding area and gather supplies for survival. You will learn to manage your highs and lows. You will gain confidence, and daily tasks will fall into place naturally. That's it: you've found your place in the group!

On a pristine beach, you might spot a Monas monkey or a crocodile, also trying to find food. Setting up camp - gathering fruit - preparing dinner... Stargazing. Overnight camping.

Day 6 - Setting up and dismantling your camp will no longer be a mystery to you. To make things more challenging, or perhaps to simplify your survival, we'll likely ask you to carry a fire with you during today's hike to rekindle it at the new campsite. You'll head inland from the coast and hike to Pico Sao Pequeno. The bivouac will be set up at the foot of the Pico, creating a Jurassic Park-like atmosphere!

Day 7 - What a feeling of accomplishment to know you can make it to the end! You'll approach the extraction site, hiking once again through the jungle and along the beaches, to reach a small paradise teeming with life and resources. More great moments of exploration, discoveries, and successes await! Learning the techniques will be the best form of entertainment. Learning ancestral skills from the locals and your guides will allow you to push your limits and feel truly alive. The bond with your fellow survivalists will grow ever stronger. Overnight in a bivouac.

Day 8 - You've now spent seven nights in the wilderness; this adventure is perfectly suited to you. This morning, you'll wake up feeling much better than the previous days! You're only a few degrees above sea level, and you've made it. You're already dreaming of the gargantuan buffet that awaits you: grilled fish, chicken, vegetables, rice, fruit, coffee or tea, and unlimited mineral water. Breaking camp will be quick, as you'll only have a few kilometers left to reach your extraction point and return to "civilization." A boat will be waiting for you on the beach. A short boat ride, and you'll see your "exit point": the most beautiful ecolodge on the island. There, you'll find your belongings left at the start—a red wooden bungalow on stilts—a hot shower, internet access... pure luxury!

The afternoon will be spent relaxing on the beach, a perfect time to debrief on this adventure. After a hearty and delicious dinner, it will be time to celebrate this internship in style. Overnight at the lodge in a truly comfortable bed.

Day 9 - Breakfast - The adventure continues! You will depart by boat from the hotel beach to reach the small islet of Rolas. Promise kept and objective achieved, you will be at 0° latitude and 0° longitude (according to the Portuguese conquistador). Lunch on the island at a typical beach restaurant and return to the resort in the afternoon. After dinner, at nightfall, if you wish, you can go see the turtles that come ashore to lay their eggs (visit not included in the price). Overnight at the lodge.

Day 10 - Breakfast - Transfer to São Tomé. You will take the EN2. This very bumpy road will take you back up towards the capital on the east side of the island at an average speed of at least 20 km/h. You'll meander through palm forests, along the rugged coastline, and past fine sandy beaches. We can make short stops so you can take photos.

Lunch will be served en route at Roça São João, undoubtedly the best restaurant on the island, run by a local celebrity in an enchanting setting.

You'll arrive in the capital in the evening. You'll be accommodated in a hotel in the city where dinner will be served.

Day 11 - Breakfast - Free day by the large pool - Opportunity to explore the city, buy souvenirs, visit the museum describing the island's history... Transfer to the airport by taxi or bus during the day, depending on your return flight schedule.

PLEASE NOTE: The itinerary is subject to change. Weather, game, and predators are unpredictable factors that may necessitate adjustments to the program to ensure the smooth running of the course and your safety.
