Black Périgord (Dordogne) - IDF
BUSHCRAFT
apprenticeship at
techniques
BASIC TECHNICAL BUSHCRA FT
Difficulty:
General information
Bushcraft is a deliberate choice, unlike a survival situation. You will have your own equipment and supplies. To learn how to return to a simpler life in the wilderness, like trappers, we will teach you all the construction techniques to build your camp. No Mike Horn or Indiana Jones here; you will shape your shelter, build your furniture, carve your tools, and perfect your traps, bows, and arrows. We'll also cover leather tanning, meat smoking, and our short courses in wild cooking and fire-making without matches.
Locations (subject to change)
DORDOGNE: "Le Rozel" locality - 24590 Saint Geniès
IDF: 78440 Montalet le Bois
Day 1 (Dordogne version)
6:00 PM: Arrival of trainees at the farm. Introduction and definition of what a survival situation and Brushcraft entail. Preparation of equipment, briefing on fundamental principles. Management of priorities, dangers, objectives, etc. Departure for the campsite. Setting up a bivouac with a tarp. Learning how to make a fire (the 5 basic techniques without matches or a lighter), raising awareness of fire hazards and review of current regulations (if there are no prohibitions, we will have a small campfire). Practical exercise. Practical exercise and task allocation. Review of regulations. Meal. 12:00 AM: Sleep in the shelters.
Day 2 (trainees will be welcomed in the IDF version at 9:30 am to complete the schedule of day 1 plus day 2)
7:30 a.m.: Wake-up - Breakfast at the camp and start of the various lacing workshops.
8:30 a.m.: Development of a general camp construction plan and task allocation. Selection of a suitable location for the bivouac. The goal is for you to complete as many projects as possible. We will ask each participant to take part in as many projects as possible. Therefore, the construction of a collective or individual shelter, the design of tools and furniture (seats, benches, shelves, tables, etc.) will need to be done collaboratively.
12:00 p.m.: Lunch preparation, making wild herb bread, and cooking your meat.
2:30 p.m.: The afternoon will be dedicated to learning how to tan hides and continuing the projects started in the morning, with the introduction of new challenges such as building a clay oven.
4:00 PM: Departure for a short expedition to gather wild fruits and plants to enhance your evening meal.
6:30 PM: Dinner around the campfire, featuring the fruits gathered in the afternoon and your food supplies.
8:00 PM: Evening gathering: storytelling, impressions, group bonding, emotional intelligence management. Review of the various techniques learned during the day. Introduction to recognizing the main constellations for navigation by the stars, night walk without a headlamp in the forest.
11:00 PM: Bedtime in your newly built shelter.
DAY 3
7:30 AM: Wake up and breakfast at the campsite on your new furniture.
8:30 AM: Continuation of the tanning workshop and construction of a smokehouse for smoking meat. Continue the work of transforming hides into leather or building new tools and protective walls.
9:30 AM: If the other projects are finished, we will begin making bows and arrows, then learn hunting techniques and how to set traps… and we will review the current regulations.
12:00 PM: Lunch preparation, including making wild herb bread and cooking your meat and vegetables.
1:30 PM: The entire afternoon will be dedicated to tanning hides, making your bow and arrows, and crafting small tools.
6:30 p.m.: Meal around the fire featuring the fruits gathered in the afternoon + baking your bread in the oven.
8:00 p.m.: Evening gathering: stories, impressions, review of the various techniques learned during the day.
11:00 p.m.: Bedtime in your shelter.
DAY 4
7:30 AM: Wake-up and breakfast at the campsite
8:30 AM: Continuation and conclusion of the tanning workshop.
9:30 AM: Final touches to the various tools made and dismantling of all the equipment.
12:00 PM: Last meal at the campsite.

The media trusts us:
For over a decade,
We have made numerous media appearances, as evidenced by our press kit. From the smallest local newspaper to the biggest TV program, we have become a trusted source for journalists!

Since nature is our daily environment and our tool of the trade, we are the first to want to protect and preserve it. During our sessions, we will be vigilant in ensuring that our trainees also safeguard nature. We will regularly review the applicable rules and laws to explain, inform, and educate them on the importance of respecting them.

Far from a pure survival course (you eat well with Virgil...), this is a bushcraft-oriented course, focusing on building and improving living conditions. Nevertheless, there are workshops to learn or review essential survival skills such as fire-making, water filtration, environmental awareness, plant/berry identification and uses, as well as developing observation skills and the importance of being opportunistic.
Although this training can absolutely be done solo or in a group, you learn more in a group (small is good 😉).
In a group, we can work more on cohesion, mutual support, relying on each other's strengths and supporting each other (in a survival or "tense" situation, the mental aspect plays an extremely important role).
I chose this course to learn in a practical way how to improve my bivouac environment; it is always more effective to have a competent person who explains, re-explains, gives tips, changes approach in order to transmit this knowledge and share their experience (things that are difficult to get from a video or a book).
To be honest, I don't feel like I participated in an internship, but rather that I spent a good time in the middle of nature with "mates" and that I enriched myself with the knowledge and experiences of each of them.
The bad weather limited us a bit in the workshops but it may have allowed us to compare our different experiences and learn more.
I would like to thank you all for your simple, warm and kind welcome.
And a huge thank you to Virgil, who has no obligation to transport kilos and kilos of extra equipment and to use his own funds to make each meal a wonderful moment of sharing and conviviality. "...
... "But Virgil isn't just a "cook"! He knows how to share his extensive knowledge smoothly and calmly, and he knows how to adapt to the different personalities he encounters. Always dynamic, even-tempered, and smiling, Virgil is incredibly generous and overflowing with kindness. I'll stop there, or this will quickly become a long-winded read."
I hope to be able to do another internship with you soon (Virgil is also a good salesman 😄)
Thank you again. Take care.
Nico

This was my second internship with your teams. I found there the same kindness, field experience, and sound advice tailored to each person's expectations and questions.
As Denis told us during our discussions, sometimes the feedback is overwhelmingly positive, very, even too complimentary...but you reap what you sow 😉.
I had a wonderful internship and found exactly what I was looking for.
Beyond the profession you practice, you transmit your passion with passion.
So a big thank you to you, Denis and Nadia, we can only hope to benefit from your teaching, your anecdotes, adventure stories during future workshops.
A huge special mention to Virgil who led this training course in the "Tribaudeau" spirit. A hands-on guy, humble and completely passionate himself.
In short, it was my second internship...I'm really looking forward to the third.
And thank you again for existing.
Ludo

Simply put, COMPLETELY SATISFIED with all my questions! An incredible human adventure... well done for offering such activities!
Thank you, and all the best!
Corentin

I loved it.
Rémy is the best. Discreet, efficient, super competent and inspiring, and always there at the right time without being intrusive.
I already liked Yohan, and now I like him even more. His wild side, his simplicity, his knowledge, his encouragement. Top-notch!
I arrived at your place motivated, with ideas and goals. Thanks to the guidance and my own determination, I was able to achieve what I had in mind, with a few improvements and helpful tips from the instructors. The atmosphere, the group, the location, the meals :-) everything was perfect. I have nothing to add or replace. I've gone over the course of the internship in my mind from every angle, and I only have positive memories! In short: THANK YOU!!!
Gorka

Hello to you both, yes, it was difficult to come back; we were so much better off surrounded by nature, alongside such a great man. A truly enriching and unforgettable weekend. Next workshop in sight, and in the Marais Poitevin, hoping to see you again.
Julian

Good morning, .
I found many answers to my questions during this course. I thoroughly enjoyed discovering all the techniques and tips used to manage with very little in the Périgord forests. It also allowed me to experience new sensations, such as the fatigue caused by the various shortages of food, water, and sleep. It's easy to imagine how difficult it is to maintain these conditions for any length of time. The contents of our pack immediately become crucial.
The welcome was relaxed and the atmosphere very pleasant.
Thanks again, don't change a thing and see you soon.
Thomas
