Everest
in Sherpa country in the jungle at the foot of the
Nepal
Difficulty:
Survival course
General information
You will be immersed at the foot of the world's highest mountain range. In contrast to your view of Everest in the Himalayas (which you will see once or twice depending on the weather), you will be surrounded by lush jungle, reaching frozen lakes at over 3,500 meters, where barking deer, Bengal foxes, monkeys, and black bears will leave traces of their presence. You will be introduced to survival techniques by a welcoming and resourceful local community with incredible ancestral knowledge. Wild orchids, red pandas, and leopards will be the main topics of conversation around the campfire in the evenings. Between Buddhism and shamanism, your hosts will share their worldview and reveal the beauty of their natural world. You can even take home some of their spices: ginger, honey, chili, and of course, organic cumin!

ITINERARY
Day 1
Airport pick-up and transfer to the hotel in Bodnath.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 2
Breakfast at the hotel.
Departure from Kathmandu by jeep at 5:00 AM. We take the road that heads east from the Kathmandu Valley and turn south at Dhulikhel.
Breakfast and lunch en route.
The Himalayan range appears on your left from the scenic road that descends towards the Sun Khosi Valley. A pleasant drive through this valley with its lush vegetation: mango and banana trees line the wheat fields and rice paddies. It is a warm region at only 500 meters above sea level. We leave the main road and take the one that climbs towards Solu, a Sherpa region south of the Everest region. We ascend through pine and then fir forests to reach Phplu and then Junebesi (2700m) via a track. Check-in at the lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge.
Day 3
Breakfast at the lodge. A 3-hour hike along a beautiful track following the Junebesi River.
We pass through charming Sherpa villages with thick stone walls and stained or colored wooden windows. Then a 30-minute climb to reach the monastic city of Tubten Chöling. The Great Lama, Tulsi Rinpoche, found refuge in this valley after fleeing Tibet, which had been invaded by China in the early 1960s. Since then, hundreds of nuns and monks have joined him. Most are originally from Tibet. Their small individual dwellings now cover the mountainside around the monastery. You will have the privilege of sharing a bit of their daily life. In the kitchens, the nuns and monks on duty prepare a meal for three hundred people. Huge cauldrons steam over the fire, and hands are busy preparing momos, or Tibetan bread.
The result is a famous and balanced Tibetan meal that you will share with the high-ranking nuns and monks in the steward's hall.
In the afternoon, you will visit the grounds of the monastery founded by Tulsi Rinpoche. An excursion into the mountains surrounding the monastery will follow, along with preparations for the expedition. At the time of the ceremony, you will gather in the main hall of the monastery to witness the Buddhist ceremony where sacred horns, cymbals, and conch shells accompany the melodious chanting of the nuns and monks. Dinner and overnight stay at the monastery guesthouse.
Day 4
Breakfast
Hiking in the forest in a remote region. Only shepherds and their herds of yaks sometimes venture into this area during the summer.
Training in primitive survival techniques. Crossing a pass at over 4000m altitude and searching for a bivouac site.
Setting up a bivouac in the forest, gathering foraging, collecting firewood and water.
Overnight bivouac.
Day 5
Survival activities: You will need to establish your routine and find your place among the Asiatic black bears and leopards that inhabit these mountains. You will practice orienteering with and without a compass, finding your way using the sun or moon, and moving around to find the best spot to set up camp for the next two nights.
Crossing a pass at 4300m, acclimatization will occur gradually, and you will begin to feel the effects of the altitude.
Setting up a bivouac in the forest, gathering foraging, collecting firewood and water. Overnight bivouac.
Day 6
Objective: Sacred Lake of Dudh Kunda.
Depending on the snow cover and weather conditions, you will have the opportunity to climb to the sacred lake of Dudh Kunda, perched at 4,600 meters altitude! The peaks surrounding the lake, reaching nearly 7,000 meters, will leave you speechless. You are now on the roof of the sky. All your efforts will be demanding, and you will progress slowly. Conserving energy will be your primary concern. In this environment, making a fire with two pieces of wood and preparing your meal using only your meager reserves and the day's foraged finds will be a remarkable feat. We will also discuss altitude sickness and acclimatization to better understand life at the summits. Return hike and overnight stay at the same campsite.
Day 7
You're in the deep end!
You'll follow the trails that villagers use in summer to reach the Dudh Kunde lakes. What could be better than feeling like the first climbers of the world's largest mountain range! Survival will now be your daily reality, and you'll have found a rhythm to continue the experience. Building a good bivouac with a fire and drinking water, eating wild plants, and preparing a delicious herbal tea will fill you with joy.
Setting up a bivouac, gathering wild plants, collecting wood and water (from a spring). Overnight bivouac in the forest, building shelters.
Day 8
In the morning, you'll be up early to dismantle your camp and begin the trek to reach civilization and the Sherpa villages via the Trakshindo ridges. Check-in at a lodge. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge (FINALLY, LUXURY).
Visit the village, its school, its temples... and the opportunity to learn how to prepare a traditional Nepalese dish, your evening meal.
Day 9
Breakfast
A final day of hiking awaits you in a dense forest of conifers and rhododendrons covered in lichen. We must stay together for fear of bears.
Occasionally, a clearing allows us to glimpse the valleys below and, in the distance, the Himalayan range. The trail now runs along a ridge above the trees. Views of Everest and the snow-capped peaks. After reaching a very old stupa, we join the wide track leading to Phaplu and follow it for over an hour before cutting through a pretty village overlooking Phaplu, at 2460m. Arrival in Phaplu in the late afternoon and check-in at a lodge. Dinner and overnight stay in a lodge
Day 10
Breakfast
Departure from Phaplu by jeep at dawn to reach the Kathmandu Valley. Check-in in Patan, a royal city near Kathmandu.
The hotel is located in the Newar district, very close to the Royal Palace Square, one of the jewels of Nepalese architecture.
Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in town.
