Survival course
Caribbean
in the Dominican Republic
Difficulty:
Route and general information
Do you dream of becoming a modern-day Robin Crusoe for a few days, alone on a completely deserted beach? It's possible by participating in the "Caribbean" course. You'll be fully immersed in the heart of a vast ecological sanctuary for a truly unique experience. On your deserted island, you'll discover, with our local guide and instructor, all the survival techniques needed to thrive in this demanding environment. The Dominican Republic isn't just about pristine beaches and luxury resorts. It also boasts nature reserves and protected areas that reveal the region's stunning biodiversity. Spend several nights and days searching for crabs in the mangroves, collecting honey and finding fresh water, and exploring lagoons inhabited by pelicans and cranes. Build yourselves shelters in the middle of the bush, and wait for night to discover the fascinating world of "little critters"... And finally, at the end of your internship, your reward will be a great day excursion, local meals or Dominican culture and traditions will be on the agenda.

ITINERARY
Day 1: Airport pickup in Punta Cana. Transfer scheduled for 4:00 PM with the entire group (book your outbound flight to arrive in Punta Cana before 4:00 PM). We'll then travel to our fishing village by local minibus. Alternatively, you can recover from jet lag in a small family-run hotel in the heart of the lively center.
Day 2: "The camp begins…" - You'll board a local boat for a fast-paced hour-long ride. You'll be dropped off on a deserted beach in the middle of the nature reserve. Hike to the campsite. Develop a strategy and explore your surroundings. Learn basic camp-building techniques and how to make a fire without a lighter or matches. You will learn how to use a machete, identify plant food resources, collect drinking water, and learn various hunting and fishing techniques. You will test all your knowledge in real-life situations! Evening and night camping.
Day 3 “Total Immersion…” - Break camp at first light - hike in an Australian bush-like environment - arrive at the site mid-day - set up camp, collect wild honey, collect drinking water, observe jungle flora and fauna - Evening and night camping.
Day 4 – “Total Immersion… Part Two” - Return to the coast to camp on a deserted beach - Choose a suitable spot for camping (coconut palms and fine sand) - Divide up the tasks. Fire-making using traditional methods without lighters or matches, crafting bamboo cutlery and plates, observing vegetation, stress management, foraging, a "local" dinner, etc... Completely self-sufficient with guidance from our specialists, you'll fish with a harpoon, a trap, and other methods! You'll even try building a fishing weir! You'll learn how to combat the heat.
Evening and overnight camping.
Day 5 – "Total Immersion"
Continuing "survival" on the island. Identifying animal tracks, distilling water, foraging for food, improvised harpoon fishing - Sunset and swimming alone in the world, etc. Building a shower... Evening and overnight camping.
You will have grasped the scope of the course and become a true Robin Crusoe! The day will be spent performing familiar tasks and routines. The last evening will be for reflection and nostalgia. Overnight in a bivouac.
Day 6 - Deliverance - You will emerge from your shipwrecked state by building a raft to reach your boat. A meal will be served promptly - you'll set off for civilization! The afternoon will be free (shower, Wi-Fi, meals… pure luxury!). Overnight in a local hotel and a party.
Day 7 – “Private excursion…” Visit to a sugar cane plantation, a family-run cigar factory, and a local market – all interspersed with tastings of cacao, fish, and succulent local dishes!
Day 8 – Transfer to Punta Cana… to the international terminal for your return flight. Arrival at the airport around 1 p.m. (Please book your return flight after 3 p.m.).

I am completely satisfied with the internship: environment, supervision and organization!
It was exactly what I was looking for and even more with all the surprises that awaited us at the end of the internship.
Plus, not a single mosquito, not a downpour, perfect!
I might have liked to spend a little more time in the water spearfishing (only 1 outing with 3 people), but it wasn't possible to go alone for safety reasons, and the reefs were far away.
It's really not a big deal.
